The Beckett Project

Beckett Project TTRP ITI Phillip Zarrilli

Not I / Footfall / Play / Rockaby

In collaboration with Esplanade as part of The Studios

Critically acclaimed in Los Angeles, the UK, Ireland and Austria, The Beckett Project made its Asian debut this August with performances of four plays by renowned Irish playwright Samuel Beckett. Award-winning American actress Patricia Boyette, along with the 3rd Cohort of graduating actor-students took on the difficult task of performing this diverse set of late plays by Beckett. The Beckett Project showcased the graduating actor-students in Play and Footfalls, and Boyette in her award-winning performances of Rockaby and Not I. The tightly orchestrated plays offered moments that are in turn haunting, evocative and humorous. Given their precision, all the plays offered a tremendous challenge for the actors. Performed to mark the Beckett Centenary, The Beckett Projects was unique opportunity to experience the range and diversity of plays authored by the Nobel prize-winning Beckett in one evening – another milestone for Singapore theatre. Beckett’s work has garnered much criticism and debate. Some have viewed him as a pessimist, while others think his work captures our common human condition.

Footfalls was performed in Mandarin with English subtitles.
