Residency @ ITI: What Weird World - Open Sessions

Now in its third year, the Residency @ ITI asks artists-in-residence to offer Open Sessions to the arts community and general public, to foster more engagement with artistic processes at various stages of development.

What Weird World is a participatory performance laboratory that seeks to examine our messy and unfamiliar contemporary world through the lens of childhood perception. Combining the educational drama convention “Mantle of the Expert” with the physical theatre technique of Human Tableaux, the project explores how we might re-learn our relationship with the environment and one another. The audience moves beyond passive observation to become part of the physical and imaginative architecture of the performer’s world.

ITI Artist-in-Residence: Afiszan Amat & James Anthony Carino

Afiszan Amat is a Singapore-based performance maker, director, and drama educator whose practice bridges physical theatre, pedagogy, and community-driven creation. His work explores presence, embodiment, and the relationship between tradition and contemporary performance.

He is particularly interested in creating inclusive spaces where young and emerging performers can engage meaningfully with artistic processes while contributing their own perspectives.

James Anthony Carino (Jac) shapes performance through narrative, instinctive flow, and physical resonance. A Valedictorian and Best Graduate of NAFA’s Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Performance Making, his practice spans theatre, dance, and interdisciplinary work.

Beyond performing, he creates and directs interdisciplinary works exploring how movement, narrative, and live performance generate new forms of embodied expression.

Open Sessions:

1. RCT-S0: Experimental Play Lab
26 Sep, Sat | 7:30 PM – 9:30PM

You are invited to RCT-S0, a working lab session where audiences step in as “scientific experts” to experiment, question, and help shape the evolving world of their research project - What Weird World. 

Developed by Jac and Afis (NAFA BAPM alumni) during their ongoing residency at ITI, this open laboratory welcomes you to move, play, and discuss alongside the artists – bringing your curiosity to a space with no right answers, only strange questions and discoveries to be made.

What to wear: Please come in comfortable clothing as there will be movement and physical activity in the space.

24 & 25 Oct, Sat & Sun: 7:30 PM – 9:00 PM (by invitation)
31 Oct, Sat: 6:30 PM – 7:30 PM (open to public)
Venue: ITI Studio 5*
*Please note that Studio 5 is not wheelchair accessible.

Subject: Anomalous Biological Entity is a participatory experience bringing audiences together to observe, respond, alter the environment, and engage in research on an unknown creature.

There is a creature here.
We do not know exactly what it is.
We do not know what it wants.
And we are running out of time.

Subject: Anomalous Biological Entity is a work-in-progress presentation by ITI artists-in-residence Afiszan Amat and James Anthony Carino, in fulfilment of their residency project, what weird world.

On 24 & 25 October, Afiszan and James invite the arts community to engage with their research through a work-in-progress showing at Studio 5, followed by a feedback session and dialogue with the audience.

On 31 October, the artists present a special edition of Subject: Anomalous Biological Entity in conjunction with SCARYPURA — a full day of art, monsters, movies, stories — and some very Singaporean nightmares, at the historic enclave of 11 Upper Wilkie Road.

This free session is open to the public with registration.
